Watering Tips for Backyard Flocks

Readily-available fresh, cold water is very important to the health of your chickens.

If your laying chickens do not consume enough water, egg size will decrease and ultimately egg production can drop by as much as 50%. During the cold winter months it is important to make sure the water in your drinking fountain does not freeze. One way to deal with this potential problem is to use an electric-heated waterer.

Not only should you provide an adequate supply of water each day, but it is important that the water they receive is fresh and clean. The general rule of thumb is if you wouldn’t drink the water yourself, your chickens shouldn’t drink it either. Don’t just add new water to the old water in the water fountain. Empty out the old water, clean the water fountain and fill it with fresh water daily.
