winterize your chickens

The long days of sunlight are behind us and the cold days are approaching. Now is the perfect time to start getting your chickens ready for winter. Lighting is crucial for your birds' production during the winter months. Chickens are light-sensitive;  they need the daylength to initiate hormone release which tells their body to lay eggs.  The average amount of "sunlight" for production hens is 16 - 17.5 hrs of light per day all year long.

Providing light for your chickens during the winter is not a difficult task, but there are several options for light bulbs. The bulbs range in spectrum from yellowish-white to bluish- white. It is very important to have 1 compact fluorescent 2700K bulb for a 10 x 10 area. which would house up to 50 chickens. If you have a 10 x 10 area you would want to have your light fixture in the middle of the room.
